This belt also came from my Swedish Mormor (grandmother).
The other day Clark said, "Wow, you are wearing that great dress again".... duh?  It's almost like they are changing so rapidly that he forgot about the project.
I was at an art opening recently and a woman was asking me about my dress, I told her about the project and she asked me what school I went to.  When I told her I didn't go to school, she asked if I was joking.  I told I already had my MFA and that this was just me, being me, making art.  She asked me why I would want to do something like this, and where do I find the time to do it, and I said "Well, it's kind of like my job."  She just stood there with this look on her face and then walked off to look at other art, landscape art, perhaps something she could more readily justify... I that situation feeling weird only to be redeemed by meeting a man and a woman who asked me about the gallery I was sitting for and then the man said-"Where's your art?" And I said "I'm wearing it" and then I gave him my spiel and we introduced ourselves and I when I found out I was talking wit Major Jackson the night had been made spectacular.  I am a major Major Jackson fan(sorry for the pun)... to find out more about his beautiful words and poetry visit: http://www.majorjackson.com/
Sometimes I wish I could forget about the project, but I have found a new group of cheer leaders... my soon to be 4 weeks of Fashion Design Camp.  I am preparing the classroom and even suffering a little for  the sake of fashion.. I kinda maybe sorta threw out my back bringing 15 tubs of clothing organized by color out of our studio attic in preparation for camp... I am laying on some icepads and taking it easy so that I can speedily recover for next week.  In the mean time, I think I have some sewing to do.

I am starting to embroider words on this dress.  I want to honor the original garment, but impose my own imperfect handiwork. I have been thinking alot about words like Courage and Compassion.  I have even started to look them up in other languages, primarily Spanish and Swedish to make sense with my background... so many words for Courage in Spanish, so many words for compassion is Swedish...

More paper circus flirtations.

Detail of the stitchwork on my shoulder.
And an image of my fancy new shoes that completely disgust the fashionista in me, but delight the foot pragmatist.
What is it about a good pair of highheels that are so difficult to resist and yet I will blow off a decent pair of shoes whose goal is to make my feet happy and balanced?  Why are the heels so seductive?  What if these Vibram Five Finger shoes came in gold with little painted sliver toe dots?

Kiki Smith

The other day my Kiki Smith book kept telling me to open it.  I kept ignoring it.  It kept saying open me. I kept ignoring it, until I found a moment with nothing to do... so I sighed and walked over to the book thinking I how could you possibly help me with my tatted lace doily problem... I photocopied the first page I turned to and now it is on my wall next to my work... what a great moment... eureka!

Reshaping the dress. Trying to make look less sack like.
Added a belt, cut off the sleeves.  Sewing with red thread, blanket stitches around the sleeve edges.  Taking the dress in along the armpits.

Gearing up for teaching four weeks of Fashion Design Camp.

Got the best compliament via Facebook the otherday.  A woman in New Orleans was having lunch outside talking with a friend about my dresses, when some one from the next table said "Are you talking about Wylie Sofia Garcia, my girlfriend has one of her dresses, we love her art." -  This just made my month.
What a compliament, how humbling and how empowering. Maybe I do know what I am doing after all.

June 10, 2011

It is hot and humid tonight.  Yesterday the studio peaked near 100 degrees F.  And because of the heat I have chosen this awesome Vintage Mexican Embroidered dress.  Ironically it came from my Swedish Grandmother and not my Mexican one.
I have been doing alot of art coaching lately and in one of my meetings we have been talking about irony in art.  Humor and metaphor can be a great mix, often overlooked, or over worked.  I am thinking about perhaps playing with this...
I have also been talking with several artists whose work is very language based, words, words appearing from negative space in words, language as a temporal medium vs. a permanent one, language, words, language, words... I am not usually a fan of words in art...why?  To literal?
I am reminded of the Modest Mouse lyrics for the song "Blame it on the Tetons" :
Language is the liquid that we are all dissolved in, great for solving problems after it creates a problem
on another note, I am henceforth declaring my love for all things circus and have started in my oh so modest way to collect vintage circus costumes. This lovely corset is from the 1950's.  I love that it has hand beaded fleur de lis on it.

This is some music I made today with Google.

Three days left. Three days to transform Thimbelina into an illusion an illusion of performance... A layer to complete the first part, last month's dress. The Church of Circus is going great, this is the name of our group that Thimbelina will be a part of for a show in August.

Shows Shows Shows. I am almost at the end of month 7. I am starting to feel the beginning of the end. I am starting to feel the personal pull of the artist's goal to out-do one's self... Each dress must be better than the last. But I don't want to loose perspective, this is a performance about art integrating into life and the transformation of a dress on the body of a woman... If I start to analyze this project in monthly compartments, I loose site of the goal as a whole.... What does it mean for a woman to wear a dress every day for an entire year? What does it mean for her to make that dress, own it, I mean really OWN it?

The next show will be in September at Helen Day Art Center... A show about masculinity.... I am the counter point....pressure and ego... Whoa... Feeling it. Thinking of names for my body of work within this context.... Thinking about calling it "The tulle did her in"... I have to give props to the woman I am designing a wedding dress for... She re quoted something I said and then told me it would be a great show title... Thanks Danielle.

Starting a new art auction to benefit Joplin, Missouri... tornados are scary. To find out more visit:  wyliegarciaartauction.blogspot.com
I have paused a little on Thimbelina.  I am waiting to add the final touches after tomorrow night.  The dress is on her way to becoming a little more x-rated than a kids art opening can handle.  It's one thing to make art and have a dress that I wear everyday, but then there are professional responsibilities... which are great because they give me a break to pause and let Thimbelina have a little space before I get back to the finishing touches.
